Sciperio Inc. Mentioned in Genetic Engineering News
Under the heading "Engineering Methods for Tissue & Cell Repair," Sciperio Inc. was part of an article in the April 15, 2003, issue of Genetic Engineering News.
- The concept of growing 3-D tissues and replicating the design and function of human tissues may soon be a reality. Through advances in engineering, genomics, proteomics, and cell biology research, companies are developing technologies to push the field of tissue engineering forward. The estimated worldwide market for regeneration of bone, cartilage, and other connective structural treatments is approximately $15 billion. Sciperio (Stillwater, OK) has developed a desktop device that creates in vitro 3-D engineered tissue constructs in a layer-by- layer fashion. “This 3-D printing works like an ink-jet printer, but it is significantly more advanced,” William L. Warren, Ph.D., president, explains. “We take an image from an MRI scan or computerized tomography, a 3-D representation of the tissues, and then literally hit ‘print.’ Instead of using ink, the machine uses cells, biomaterials, and biomolecules to try and replicate the endogenous tissue.”
